AN ACT TO CREATE A PILOT PROJECT DESIGNED TO KEEP CHILDREN IN SCHOOL; TO AUTHORIZE THE USE OF TOBACCO LITIGATION FUNDS FOR SUCH PILOT PROJECT; TO REQUIRE RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE LEGISLATURE; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. (1) The State Department of Education is hereby directed to create a pilot project in two (2) school districts in each of the five (5) congressional districts which will develop innovative methods to keep children in school. The Legislature shall appropriate sufficient funds from tobacco litigation funds to cover the costs of the pilot project.
(2) The State Department of Education shall promulgate any rules and regulations necessary to carry out such pilot project. The department shall report to the Legislature in January 2000, on the effectiveness of the pilot project and shall make recommendations to the Legislature regarding statewide implementation of such project.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
